The Do’s and Don’ts for Church Leaders in the Area of Finance
Jesus said in Luke 16:11, ‘So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches?’ As a team, we have known tests and blessing in this area. Here are my reflections for church leaders:
Common Mistakes:
- We don’t intentionally apply faith for increase in our budgets
- Leaders believe that their personal stewardship doesn’t matter
- We focus on giving, not stewardship
- It is left to the “finance guys” with a type of mistaken pride around what are spiritual matters
- Infrequent, poor quality communication to the church
Positive Leadership:
- Practice excellence in stewardship, personally and corporately
- Model true, open accountability in all leaders
- Set specific faith goals with prayer and fasting
- Make finance part of vision-building, based on God’s biblical economic principles
- Habitually sow into the kingdom outside of ourselves
