Andrew (who) Selley

Since today is the birthday of Andrew Selley, we thought we’d take the opportunity to find out more about the man they call AJ Selley (okay, we’re not sure if anyone calls Andrew ‘AJ’, but we think it’s catchy, right?).

This is what Andrew had to say:

If you had a chance for a “do-over” in life, what would you do differently?
Absolutely nothing. Wherever I’ve had the power to make decisions, I’ve loved living wholeheartedly in each of them. I am who I am today because of my life experiences, and for this reason I treasure each and every one.

If you could only keep four possessions, what would they be?
My surfboard, my wetsuit, my Jeep and our caravan (because it has everything in it I need to live practically).

What would you want your tombstone to say?
Here lies the tent of a man, whose passionate obedience to Jesus transformed nations and whose life and love changed countless individual lives.

What do you most admire in people?
The anointing of God.

What are your top three favorite books and why?
The Bible – its words continuously change me, and honestly, I couldn’t pick only two others. So many books have touched me at different times and have shaped my soul – anything from Francine Rivers to J. I. Packer have impacted me in the moment.

What age do you feel right now and why?
I probably feel around 35. I would’ve said 30, except for the aches and pains in my body from years of extreme sport, which remind me I’m getting old!

Shark diving, bungee jumping, or sky diving?
None grab me as really fun, but if I had to choose one, I would say sky diving, because it’s the only one I haven’t done.

If you could witness any event of the past, present or future, what would it be?
Jesus’s return.

What is the weirdest scar you have, and how did you get it?
Probably the scar on my forehead, which I got while doing ministry in East London earlier this year. We were sleeping in a caravan, and in the middle of the night, I woke up to a loud bang. When I went from the caravan into the tent to investigate, I found that a rainstorm had collapsed a part of the tent. As I bent down to get through a low section, a tent pole fell into the ground, bounced up, and pierced my forehead as I moved through a low section. It was the middle of the night, in a foreign city, Emma was sick, and I had to find my way into the city to get medical help.

Is there a documentary or book that really changed the way you thought about something?
As a young man, some of Gene Edwards books radically changed the way I saw church and God. Later, Dudley Daniels’ manuals entirely reformed my understanding of the church.

If you could eat only 3 foods for the rest of your life, what would they be?
This is a hard question, because I’d probably get sick of eating the same three things. My three favorite things to eat are prawns, lamb chops and sushi, so I’d choose them.

If you could be a cartoon character for a week, who would you be?
Wilbur Kookmeyer (for those who don’t know, he is a world renowned international surf star…in a surf comic).
